When I was about to graduate college I noticed there is a gap between what was being taught in college courses and what skills employers are actually looking for. From my first day in the design industry to today I have been observant and able to identify the skills needed to put a candidate ahead. I wish I had known in the beginning of my career what to expect. I look back and wish I had the knowledge I have now when I was starting out, so I could have hit the ground running. Early on I wish I had someone to show me the ropes, gaining insight into what a day in the life of an actual designer looked like. Now I am that resource for others I wish I had. Another thing school never prepares us for is how wide our industry is. We are limited in our exposure to industry specialties starting out. Sharing different specialities and avenues available in the interior design world is a passion of mine. I am a resource for you to find the specialty that aligns with your personality best.
Hello! Im glad you are here. I am excited for your future and what we can create together. A bit about me, my background and why I created Brandi By Design.
I am a passionate, forward thinking, business minded woman. I am always pushing the boundaries to see what I can achieve. I have dedicated a good portion of my life to self improvement. In that process I have learned the power of asking questions, being straight forward, knowing my worth, love what you do, whats meant for me will find me and what I offer to the world. I have found the more effort I give, the more opportunities come my way. Throughout my experience I have found the most strategic approaches to resume building, interviews, and negotiating job offers. In my trials, errors and successes I have found what works, what gets the best results and what we all need to be an invaluable asset. Being a resource that fosters connection and empowers everyones unique journey is a passion of mine. I continue to work hard and have recently become a member of the IIDA RMC board to be an advocate and resource for the industry.
My diverse career background gives me a unique insight and knowledge to all things interior design. I have first hand experience in both residential and commercial design. I have been a designer at every size company from a startup design firm to a global design firm, from this I know the unique needs of each type of firm. I have strategies on how to approach each and every interview with a different perspective to give you insider knowledge to make you stand out during interviews.
MY FIRST DESIGN JOB WAS A LUXURY RESIDENTIAL INTERNSHIP. WHEN I FINISHED MY INTERNSHIP HOURS I HAD JUST STARTED MY SENIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE. THE DESIGN STUDIO I INTERNED FOR HIRED ME IMMEDIATELY AFTER MY INTERNSHIP HOURS WERE COMPLETE FOR AN ENTRY LEVEL POSITION. I WAS HIRED AS A DESIGNER BEFORE I EVEN GRADUATED AND WORKED FOR THIS STUDIO THROUGHOUT MY SENIOR YEAR UNTIL I GRADUATED.
GETTING INTO COMMERCIAL DESIGN WAS THE START OF A WHOLE NEW WORLD. SO MANY DOORS I DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED WERE OPENED. IN THIS ROLE I SPECIALIZED IN MULTIFAMILY TENANT IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS. THIS INCLUDED THE REDESIGN OF MODEL UNITS, LEASING CENTERS, CLUBHOUSES, FITNESS CENTERS, POOL AREAS, PAINT SELECTIONS FOR THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING AND ALL COMMON AREAS. THIS ALSO INCLUDED CUSTOM FURNITURE DESIGN AND COORDINATING WITH DEALERS. AT ANY GIVEN TIME I WOULD HAVE 8-12 MULTIFAMILY PROJECTS ON MY PLATE ACROSS THE WESTERN UNITED STATES. IN THIS ROLE MY JOB REQUIRED 30% TRAVEL TO MANAGE THESE PROJECTS ON SITE.
NEW BUILD MULTIFAMILY PROJECTS DIFFER DRASTICALLY FROM TENANT IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS. THE NEW BUILD MULTIFAMILY PROJECTS I WAS DESIGNING UNIT TYPES AND LAYOUTS FOR THE ENTIRE BUILDING. CORRIDOR DESIGN IS ALSO A SKILL I GAINED IN MULTIFAMILY NEW BUILD PROJECTS. IN NEW BUILDS YOU HAVE TO BE AWARE OF AND LOOK AT MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS. THIS INCLUDES, DIMENSION REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS THAT I WAS ALREADY USE TO BEING SET IN TENANT IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS. EVERY PROJECT MEANS A NEW LEARNING CURVE.
MY CURRENT PROJECT HAS ME IN A SPECIALTY NICHE I HAVE NEVER BEEN IN BEFORE. THIS PROJECT WAS PRESENTED TO ME BY THE AVIATION DESIGN TEAM SAYING THEY THOUGHT I WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO THIS AIRPORT PROJECT & TEAM. I WAS SELECTED FOR THIS PROJECT BASED ON MY ATTENTION TO DETAIL, SKILL SET, ABILITY TO ASK QUESTIONS AND MY LOVE OF LEARNING ACCORDING TO THE TEAM. I AM DEFINITELY LEARNING EVERY MINUTE I AM ON THIS PROJECT. THAT IS SOMETHING I CAME TO KNOW ABOUT OUR INDUSTRY PRETTY QUICK, WE WILL NEVER STOP LEARNING AND WE WILL NEVER KNOW IT ALL.
